Residents of Kitwe Town Council in Ruhaama East County, Ntungamo District have raised concerns over the lack of electricity in some parts of the town council, which they say has left them behind in terms of development.

Residents say that although electricity reached Kitwe Town Council in 2009, it is still limited to the town centre, Central Ward, and Bakiharire Ward, leaving a bigger part of the town council without power.

Tumwesigye Wilson Bwafamba, a resident of Omukibare Ward, told our reporter that ever since electricity was extended to Kitwe in 2009, their ward has not received even a single electric pole. He blamed leaders for failing to ensure that electricity reaches all parts of the town council.

Bwafamba said residents also deserve to enjoy the benefits of electricity, noting that they equally participate in choosing leaders.

Ndyamuhaki Julius, the LC1 Chairperson of Runoni Village in Central Ward, said there is a need to extend electricity coverage, noting that even some residents in Central Ward do not have access to power despite its presence in the town council.

He added that most people in Kitwe Town Council still use lamps and lanterns due to lack of electricity, and urged authorities to intervene and help residents overcome the challenge.

Meanwhile, Kahima Moses, the Ruhaama East County Member of Parliament–elect, confirmed the lack of electricity in some parts of the constituency and pledged to work towards addressing the problem after officially assuming office.
