Territorial police in Kisoro District are investigating the murder of Muhawenimana Tota, a 40-year-old Rwandan national and resident of Nyabiyonga Village, Chibumba Parish, Murora Sub-county. The suspect, identified as Bandiho Charles, who resides in the same village, is alleged to have committed the crime on November 11, 2024, at around 4 p.m.
Witnesses report that Duhoranenawe Janet was descending a hill when she saw Muhawenimana climbing towards her home, with Charles following close behind. The suspect reportedly stopped Muhawenimana, and the two began to fight. Charles managed to overpower her, using her own clothing to strangle her. Janet, who witnessed the incident, raised an alarm, drawing residents to the scene. Unfortunately, Muhawenimana had already died by the time they arrived.
An enraged mob then turned on Charles, beating him severely. Police were alerted by a resident, Jostina Mukamuseni, and officers responded to the scene, documenting evidence and recording statements from witnesses. Muhawenimana’s body was taken to Kisoro Hospital mortuary for a postmortem.
Charles, who sustained critical injuries from the mob assault, is currently receiving treatment at Kisoro Hospital. Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, urged the public to refrain from acts of violence and lawlessness, warning that such actions carry serious legal consequences. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
