Territorial police in Kanungu District have launched investigations into the death of a 35-year-old man, identified as Niwagaba Simon, a resident of Katungu Cell, Eastern Ward, Kambuga Sub-county.
According to reports, on November 11, 2024, residents of Katungu Cell accused Niwagaba of stealing several items, including cassava, a hen, a mattress, and matoke from individuals yet to be identified. This alleged theft infuriated the community, leading to a violent mob attack. In a brutal act of mob justice, Niwagaba was apprehended and set ablaze by the angry residents.
Police officers were alerted and promptly arrived at the scene, but their efforts to save Niwagaba were unsuccessful. The scene was subsequently examined and documented by the Kambuga Police Station team. Niwagaba’s body has been transported to Kambuga Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Police spokesperson for Kigezi Region, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed that investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible for the attack and ensure they face justice.
