The territorial police in Kisoro are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of 26-year-old Mwijuke Hassan, a boda boda rider and resident of Gapfurizo Parish, Nyarubuye Sub-county, Kisoro District.
According to police, Hassan was shot dead on 12th March 2026 at around 9:15 a.m. in Gaseve Village, Nyakinama Sub-county, by PC Okedi Muhammad, 25, attached to Ntungamo Police Station.
Police reports indicate that on 6th March 2026, Hassan allegedly obtained a motorcycle belonging to one Rwenturagara, a resident of North Division, Mbarara City, by deceiving the owner’s wife. The wife, believing Hassan had been sent by her husband, handed over the keys and the motorcycle (UGA 313U, Bajaji Boxer, red). When the owner returned and discovered the motorcycle missing, he reported the theft to Kakika Police Station in Mbarara City on 7th March.
Investigations revealed that the motorcycle passed through Ntungamo District, prompting the involvement of PC Okedi Muhammad. The police team tracked the stolen motorcycle and traveled to Kisoro on 11th March. On 12th March, Hassan was spotted along the Kisoro-Bunagana road carrying a female passenger on the stolen motorcycle.
Police officers attempted to arrest him, but he reportedly fled. PC Okedi initially fired warning shots into the air, but when Hassan failed to stop, he was shot in the head and died instantly.
Authorities say the scene was well-documented, with six cartridges recovered and exhibited. Hassan, along with the police team involved, has been taken in for further investigations.
The case is under inquiries by the district CID, SOCO, and the homicide unit.
