Over 100 pilgrims from Kisoro District have joined fellow Christians nationwide to commemorate Uganda Martyrs Day on June 3rd at the Catholic shrine in Namugongo, Kampala.

The festivities, which span a month, begin with devout Christians embarking on a pilgrimage to the shrine to honor the Catholic Martyrs and Saints. A significant part of the events is the Novena, a nine-day period of prayer and reflection that starts on May 25th.

Nzabara Tadeo, a catechist from Nyarusiza Hika Sooko Parish and chairperson of the Kisoro pilgrims, mentioned that their journey commenced yesterday from the Mupaka border to Bunagana border, and then to Cyanika border, where they held prayers for peace among neighboring countries. Tadeo revealed their planned 14-day trek to Namugongo Shrine, aiming to follow in the footsteps of the martyrs. He emphasized the importance of courage and perseverance, drawing a parallel between the martyrs’ endurance during their persecution and the need for patience in fostering national peace.

Mukiza Ponsiano, a catechist at Nzogera Hiika Sooko Parish, described the pilgrimage as a profound sacrifice to the Almighty. He underscored the invaluable teachings and guidance received at Namugongo, urging fellow Christians to participate actively in such spiritual endeavors to share the fruits of the Gospel.

Kambabazi Sofia, representing the pilgrims, highlighted the transformative power of these celebrations in promoting prayer, peace, and love within society.
