Kisoro Municipality is on the brink of an imminent epidemic outbreak, triggered by the rampant disposal of fecal matter in the vicinity of toilets near the Kisoro district headquarters.
Upon conducting an independent investigation, our reporter discovered numerous pathways surrounding the mentioned toilets littered with human waste. The unsanitary conditions were observed near the district works department, around the eucalyptus tree at the district headquarters, and behind Gashumba’s pub. With the district toilets closed, residents have resorted to open defecation, including the veranda of the toilets situated in front of the district headquarters.
James Agaba, the Southern division district councilor, asserts that the district’s negligence in maintaining these facilities has made it challenging for residents to attend to their basic hygiene needs. He expresses concern that the deteriorating sanitation situation in the municipality could jeopardize its prospects of obtaining city status. Agaba reveals that the Kisoro district council has unanimously decided to demolish these toilets immediately.
However, both Abel Bizimana, the Kisoro district Chairman, and Moses Acar, the Kisoro Municipality Health Inspector, have declined to comment on the state of the toilets, instead shifting blame onto each other.
