A section of Members of Parliament from Kisoro District has clashed with the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, over the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) government’s failure to fulfill key pledges in the area.
The confrontation took place on Sunday during the restoration launch ceremony of St. Mary’s Mutolere Catholic Church Parish, where Tayebwa was the chief guest. Bukimbiri County MP Eddie Kwizera Wagahungu criticized the NRM government for exaggerating its achievements while failing to deliver on crucial infrastructure projects, particularly the long-promised tarmacking of the Mutolere-Nyakabande road.
Kwizera questioned President Yoweri Museveni’s claim that the road had been completed, highlighting its deteriorating condition. He suggested that if the former Inspector General of Police, Rtd. Gen. Kale Kayihura, could receive a prompt response from the President within a week; the same urgency should be applied to addressing the issue of the road.
Similarly, Bufumbira North MP John Nizeyimana Kamara opposed Tayebwa’s call for unity among leaders, arguing that Kisoro’s slow development was not due to sectarian divisions but rather the selfishness of certain individuals who prioritize personal gain over community progress.
In response, Tayebwa defended the government’s efforts, urging MPs to acknowledge the services the NRM administration has provided. He emphasized that progress depends on parliamentary engagement, encouraging legislators to actively participate in debates and lobbying efforts to secure development projects.
He assured the MPs that construction of the Mutolere-Nyakabande road would commence soon and pledged to escalate the matter to the Minister of Works and Transport, Gen. Katumba Wamala, for urgent intervention.
