Residents and leaders in Busanza Sub County are expressing their frustration with Kisoro district authorities for their failure to repair the recently burnt Kanyamateke Bridge.

This vital bridge, built in 2011 and located in Gikoro village, serves as a crucial link between Busanza and Kirundo Sub County. Unfortunately, it has suffered damage due to an act of arson, leaving only a small portion usable for pedestrians.

Local residents, particularly farmers, are feeling the brunt of this situation. They are facing significant difficulties in transporting their agricultural produce to nearby markets, as most of the bridges in the area are no longer accessible to vehicles or motorcycles.

Joram Nzeyimana, the councilor for Busanza sub-county, highlights the extent of the problem. He explains that locals now have to cover a distance of 16-20 kilometers, from Buhoozi parish to Buhoozi HCIII, while carrying sick individuals and pregnant mothers since the bridge was destroyed.

Kisoro district Engineer James Karamira has provided some insight into the challenges the authorities face. He states that the construction of the Kanyamateke bridge requires an estimated 2.5 billion shillings, but the district has only secured 600 million shillings for this quarter.

Karamira adds that they have initiated the procurement process and are awaiting additional funding from the central government before they can commence with the construction work.
