The family members of Gen. Kale Kayihura are appealing to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to pardon and lift all the charges against him since he is retiring from the Army.

According to Mabel Mugisha, a paternal aunt to Gen Kayihura ever since Gen Kayihura was dramatically arrested by the army while reportedly attempting to flee the country through a game park in the Southwest Part of Uganda on June 13th, 2018, they were left in shock but they left everything in God’s hands.

Mugisha says that as a family, they do not regret why their son joined the army because he has raised the family high despite the charges imposed against him. She appealed to the president to pardon him so that he would be free and turn back home freely.

However, the Uganda People’s Defense Forces Spokesperson Brig. General Felix Kulayigye told our reporter that President Museveni permitted General Kale Kayihura to retire but it will all depend on how his court case is handled before the 31st of August 2023.

Brig. General Kulayigye said Gen Kale Kayihura will only be allowed to retire once his Court Case in the Army Court Martial has been disposed of.

On June 13th, 2018, Gen. Kayihura was dramatically arrested by the army while reportedly attempting to flee the country through a game park in the Southwest Part of Uganda.

Later, on August 24th, 2018, Gen Kayihura was presented before the General court-martial, and charges related to his failure to protect war material by issuing arms to unauthorized persons, including Boda-Boda 2010 members led by Abdallah Kitatta between 2010 and 2018, were brought against him.

The army further accused the General of aiding and abetting kidnappings, repatriating Rwandan exiles and refugees, and transporting Ugandan citizens to Rwanda between 2012 and 2016.

He denied the charges and, after 76 days in military custody, he was released on bail, a status he maintained until his official retirement.
