Kisizi Hospital Primary School from Nyarushanje Sub County and Kakindo Primary School from Bugangari Sub County, both in Rukungiri District, are representing Rukungiri in the regional primary school music, dance, and drama competitions.

These schools qualified yesterday after competing against nine others from each of the nine sub-counties in Rukungiri District.

The competition featured a variety of items, including two set pieces on malaria and birth registration, an original African-style composition about climate change, a traditional folk song, a traditional folk dance, an instrumental composition, and drama. Other items included storytelling, speeches on school dropouts, sight singing, and creative dance.

Participating schools included: Kisizi Hospital Primary, Kakindo, Karuhembe Primary School, Nyakisoroza Primary School, Rutooma Kihanga Primary School, Mitooma Primary School, Bikurungu Centenary Primary School, Nyakanyinya Primary School, and Kyamakanda Central Primary School.

According to Mr. Medard Niwagaba, Chairperson of the Kinimba Music Region (Kigezi Region) and Chief Adjudicator, sight singing was the weakest performed item.

He urged the regional competition qualifiers to cooperate and put Rukungiri on the map. He also expressed concern over districts not complying with government programs, noting that only five out of the nine local governments in Kigezi Region have participated.

Mr. Niwagaba highlighted the importance of music, dance, and drama in sensitizing the public on addressing various challenges and urged head teachers to invest more effort into these programs.

Jackson Turyahumura, the Rukungiri District Education Officer, praised head teachers for their compliance and participation in these competitions. He emphasized that music, dance, and drama are crucial for developing students’ talents and creating future career opportunities. He also encouraged private schools to embrace government programs, noting that Kisizi Hospital Primary, the top-performing school, was the only private school to participate in the 2024 competition.

He challenged the best performers to continue working hard and aim for the national level.
