Kisiizi Hospital Health Insurance Scheme: Transforming Lives and Communities with Affordable Healthcare Coverage”

The Kisiizi Hospital Health Insurance Scheme has received praise from residents for significantly impacting the lives of many by providing financial assistance in covering hospital charges.

Commencing in 1996, the scheme has proven instrumental in enabling beneficiaries to access medical services at Kisiizi Hospital without resorting to selling their assets to meet the financial requirements. Testimonials from beneficiaries highlight the scheme’s role in enhancing community health and facilitating timely hospital access.

Pracida Tumusiime, the treasurer and women’s representative in the Insurance Scheme, and a beneficiary herself, acknowledged its positive impact on the community’s well-being. She emphasized that, prior to the existence of the scheme, individuals would hastily leave hospitals post-treatment due to an inability to afford medical bills. Some would even forego treatment altogether, fearing escalating costs. Tumusiime revealed that people would resort to selling their properties at undervalued rates to cover medical expenses, making the Kisiizi Hospital Health Insurance Scheme a vital financial support system.

Encouraging others to join, Tumusiime highlighted the high cost of medical attention in many hospitals, underscoring the importance of having health insurance coverage.

Burunde Patrick Katono, the Vice Chairperson of the Kisiizi Hospital Health Insurance Scheme and a beneficiary, shared his gratitude for the scheme’s assistance. After undergoing surgery at Kisiizi Hospital, he only had to pay Shs. 170,000 instead of the originally expected Shs. 1.9 million. He commended the scheme for preventing him from having to liquidate his assets to settle the medical bills.

Komujuni Winfred, the Scheme Manager, emphasized the necessity of joining the insurance scheme, citing its substantial assistance in covering hospital expenses. Winfred urged those interested in joining to seek assistance from their community associations to facilitate enrollment.

Currently boasting over 34,000 members, the Kisiizi Hospital Health Insurance Scheme requires individuals to pay Shs. 41,000 for membership, making it an accessible and beneficial financial safety net for healthcare expenses.
