Authorities in Kabale district have asked the government to give Kigezi region a fully-fledged road unit, in order to reduce the burden of applying to the Ministry of Works and transport to access the unit based in Mbarara Zonal Center.
Currently, most districts have graders, Vector load rollers, and water tanks which were purchased by the government through the Ministry of Works. However, during the launching of the rehabilitation of the 13 kilometer Kigarama-Kavu road in Maziba Sub County to cost 615 million shillings yesterday, the Kabale district Engineer Januario Turinawe Bagamuhunda said that the districts lack road equipment like Bulldozers, Excavator and Low bed machines which are stationed at Mbarara Ministry of Works Zonal Center.
He added that for the district to get the machines from Mbarara one has to apply to the Permanent Secretary and to the Engineer in Chief of the Ministry of Works expressing the need for the machines.
He noted that Kigezi being a hilly area should be considered independent and given Bulldozers, wheel loaders, Excavator, and Low bed machines.
He was backed by the Kabale district Secretary for Production, Marketing and Natural Resources Ronald Bagamuhunda who said that accessing these machines from Mbarara hinders the proper Maintainance of roads
The Ndorwa East Member of Parliament Hon Wilfred Niwagaba said that he will continue pushing for the cause because Kigezi Region requires special consideration for all types of road equipment.
