The Kigezi Media Symposium, held at the Kanungu Forest Resort, focused on the essential role of media in advancing Uganda’s socio-economic transformation.

The event, themed “Mobilizing Ugandans for Social Economic Transformation,” featured keynote speaker Dr. Slyvia Arineitwe, the Deputy Managing Director of the National Water and Sewerage Corporation, represented by Dr. Jude Katerega, National Chairperson of Ugandans Under the Age of 40 (UB40).

Dr. Sylvia emphasized the importance for journalists to engage in the money economy by starting small businesses, suggesting that they also share this message with the public. She encouraged journalists to save a portion of their earnings for future stability.

In his address, Dr. Katerega highlighted the crucial role grassroots media practitioners play in disseminating information, calling on the government to actively involve media professionals in national conversations. He underscored that the country’s future depends on a well-informed media landscape.

Addressing the pitfalls of irresponsible media coverage, Dr. Katerega warned that sensational reporting can harm Uganda’s international reputation, impacting tourism and investment. He urged Kigezi journalists to commit to factual reporting and to enhance the nation’s image, despite any challenges faced by the current administration.

Condemning the rising trend of identity politics in Kigezi, he advocated for politics of interest, warning that tribalism could lead to insecurity, drawing parallels to the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

The symposium also facilitated discussions on the importance of reporting on government initiatives, particularly the Parish Development Model. Dr. Katerega encouraged journalists to promote unity and development, urging a focus on collective progress rather than divisive issues related to class, color, tribe, or religion.

The event received positive feedback from attendees, with many praising UB40 and Vice Chairperson Moses Gumisiriza for organizing the workshop. However, some journalists expressed concerns over the government’s limited engagement with media professionals, especially regarding initiatives like the Parish Development Model.
