In a bid to align with the new lower secondary curriculum, Kibatsi High School in Ntungamo District has embraced music, dance, and drama (MDD) as a key component in empowering learners with practical skills that can support them in the future.
During the school’s MDD Day held yesterday, the school leadership emphasized the value of co-curricular activities in nurturing creativity, cultural appreciation, and social awareness among students. The event brought together learners from the four school houses—Volta, Semliki, Limpopo, and Nile—to compete in a variety of activities including traditional dance, poetry recitation, speech elocution, contemporary dance, talent showcases, and brain challenges.
The competitions also featured fun games such as apple eating and news reading, giving students a platform to express themselves and discover their unique talents.
Authorities at the school noted that the initiative is in line with the Ministry of Education’s competency-based curriculum, which promotes practical learning experiences and holistic education. Each year, the school organizes these competitions in second term to allow learners to develop skills that go beyond academics.
In addition to the competitions, the school runs a “play and win” program through which it rewards outstanding performers with gifts such as cows, books, and umbrellas, recognizing their effort and participation.
Students expressed excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to engage in creative arts, saying it helps them better understand their culture, boosts their confidence, and exposes them to life skills useful for their personal development and future livelihoods.
