The family of elderly Saliverino Banyanga, commonly known as Kagyereka, in Katungu Cell, Northern Ward, Kebisoni Town Council, Rukungiri District, is living under the threat posed by an electrical hazard.
According to Ambrose Byamukama Kagyereka, the son of Saliverino Banyanga Kagyereka, an electric pole fell in their compound a month ago. Since then, the power has been switched off, and no repairs have been made. This situation has forced them to constantly monitor the fallen pole to ensure the safety of children and passersby.
Edgar Tayebwa, a resident of Katungu Cell, expressed concern about the absence of electricity, which has left them in darkness at night, made it difficult to charge phones, and hindered students from studying in the evening.
Mzee John Karibika, an elderly resident of Katungu Cell, shared his frustration over the lack of access to television, the inability to charge phones, and the absence of security lights.
Nyansio Turyabitunga, the LC1 Chairperson of Katungu Cell, lamented that despite communicating with UMEME, the power supply company in Rukungiri, they have received no response. He called for the attention of the Town Council leadership.
Patrick Muhwezi, a staff member at UMEME Rukungiri Branch, acknowledged the situation and attributed the delay in resolving the issue to a delay in receiving the procured pole. However, he expressed hope that the problem will be addressed soon.
