The residents of Kashoro Cell, Nyakyera Town Council, Ruhaama East Constituency, Ntungamo District, have expressed their frustration over the rampant school dropout rates among students in their area.

Residents say this has been a long-standing challenge in their community, noting that cases of school dropout continue to increase every year.

Speaking to Boona Radio, Kato Wilson, a resident of Kashoro Cell, said the problem is commonly caused by family violence, where parents who experience domestic conflicts end up mistreating their children, which affects their education. He added that large family sizes also contribute to the problem, as some parents fail to raise enough money for school fees and other requirements, forcing children to drop out of school. Kato concluded by requesting the government to continue providing support to both government and private schools to help reduce school dropout cases in the community.

Speaking to Serembe Levi, the LC1 Chairperson of Kashoro Cell, he placed most of the blame on parents who fail to fulfill their responsibility of ensuring that their children attend school. However, Levi noted that in some cases, parents are unable to raise enough school fees, which forces children to leave school. He added that local leaders are planning to put measures in place at the community level to address the issue of school dropout.

In response, Mutanyomwa Lasto, the District Councillor of Nyakyera Town Council, explained that some children develop negative attitudes towards education, believing that schooling does not benefit them, which leads them to drop out. He added that insufficient family income is another major cause, as some families fail to meet the basic school requirements. Lasto further noted that some leaders have failed to adequately sensitise and guide children on the importance and benefits of education.
