Local leaders and residents of Kanyatutu village, Nyabitete Bugangari sub-county, Rujumbura constituency, are expressing deep concern over the deteriorating condition of the Njororo Upper bridge on the Kanyatutu – Kigarigaru road.

Yowarb Rubahumwire, the chairperson of LC1 Kanyatutu, highlighted the significant impact the absence of a functional bridge has had on the community, both socially and economically, since it was washed away by floods. Residents are unable to access vital services such as healthcare and education, and trade has been severely hindered.

The dangerous state of the bridge has resulted in tragic incidents, with individuals falling into the river and drowning while attempting to cross. Farmers in the area struggle to transport their produce, leading to substantial losses, particularly with perishable goods like matooke and tomatoes.

The urgency of the situation is underscored by the frequent accidents and fatalities, especially among school children. Residents are pleading with authorities to intervene and construct a permanent bridge that can withstand flooding.

Retired revered Benon Tumusiime, also a resident, criticized the government’s inaction, emphasizing the ongoing risk to their lives. He stressed the importance of repairing the bridge for facilitating transportation of goods and ensuring the safety of the community.

Benison Kabyamarwaki, the district councilor representing Ruhinda sub-county, commended the efforts of local residents in attempting to address the issue but emphasized that more support is needed. He highlighted the challenges faced by patients and the negative impact on business due to the poor condition of the bridge and roads.

Kabyamarwaki appealed to relevant authorities to prioritize the repair of the bridge, emphasizing the suffering experienced by the community as a result of the current situation.
