With open campaigns fast approaching, Godfrey Karabenda, the NRM Chairperson for Kanungu District and Mayor of Kanungu Town Council, has urged residents to avoid political distractions that could hinder development. Speaking during the burial of Edivina Bagoro in Kyambogo Cell, Karabenda warned against abandoning productive activities for political debates, cautioning that such tendencies could deepen poverty in the community.

The burial mass was led by Fr. Tamale of Nyamirama Parish and Fr. Celestine Bikorwomihangyi of Makiro Parish. During the service, they addressed concerns over allegations of witchcraft. Fr. Tamale condemned reliance on witchcraft and emphasized the importance of education as a means to combat ignorance and poverty. These remarks followed claims from the deceased’s son, who alleged that their mother encountered unusual items outside her door before her death, fueling rumors of witchcraft. However, Harriet, the deceased’s daughter, clarified that medical reports showed their mother died due to complications from low blood sugar.

Fr. Celestine echoed Pope Francis’s recent message, urging Christians to persevere and draw inspiration from the resilience of the Holy Family in times of hardship.

In related news, the Electoral Commission has announced the General Update of the National Voters’ Register, scheduled to run from January 20 to February 10, 2025. This vital exercise is part of preparations for the 2026 General Elections and aims to ensure that all eligible voters are registered to participate in free and fair elections.

As Kanungu prepares for the political season, residents are encouraged to prioritize unity, productivity, and faith to foster growth and prosperity in the district.
