Incomplete roadworks on the Muramba-Rugyeyo to Rutenga road and the poor construction of the Kambuga-Nyakabungo road have continued to hinder economic development in Kanungu District. This has forced some local leaders and residents to regularly raise concerns.

Speaking to Boona FM, the Rugyeyo Sub-County District Councillor, Mr. Akankwasa Joseph, expressed disappointment over the district’s poor road connectivity. He questioned the failure to properly implement and complete road projects despite the district receiving substantial funding, up to 1 billion shillings per district.

Mr. Akankwasa revealed that he raised a motion in the district council to investigate possible corruption contributing to the failure and poor quality of road works in Kanungu.

He singled out the Kambuga–Nyakabungo road, which he said was constructed without culverts, and the Muramba–Rugyeyo road, meant to connect to Rutenga Subcounty. The latter was allocated 69 million shillings to cover 6 kilometers of murram road with culverts, but surprisingly, only 3 kilometers were done and left unfinished.

Mr. Joseph further expressed his frustration with the district’s local government’s continued failure to construct and complete its roads. He noted that community-led efforts (Burungi Bwansi) are often more effective than the district’s road projects. He went on to appreciate the Minister of ICT and Kinkiizi East MP, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, for supporting such communal initiatives, which have improved the feeder road network in remote areas.

In response, the Kanungu District Engineer, Mr. Mutumba Eric, appealed for patience, saying that current efforts have been focused in Kinkiizi West. He added that the district council recently allocated an additional 24 million shillings to help complete the Muramba–Rugyeyo to Rutenga road, as the earlier funds had been insufficient.

Engineer Mutumba pledged to shift focus to Kinkiizi East roads starting May 2025 in order to address the raised concerns.
