Residents from Nyarutuntu Sub-county in Ntungamo District have continued to express concern over the deteriorating state of their roads.
They say that roads under the management of the Sub-county are in worse condition compared to those maintained by the district, a situation that is severely affecting their day-to-day lives.
George Niyaari, the LC1 Chairperson of Nyakatete Cell, said that their community lacks leaders who can effectively advocate for their concerns to the relevant authorities. He added that the Sub-county lacks the necessary resources to work on the roads.
“This challenge is affecting us a lot,” George said. “It has become very difficult to transport our agricultural produce from one place to another, yet farming is our main source of income.”
Peter Nimwesiiga, the LC1 Chairperson of Rubimbiri Cell, also pointed out that the poor state of roads remains their biggest challenge. He noted that they have been informing their leaders, who continue to promise action, but so far, no tangible steps have been taken.
He added that organizing communal work would have been an option, but most residents in the village are elderly and physically unable to participate in such efforts.
In response, John Wilton Katooma, the LC3 Chairperson of Nyarutuntu Sub-county, acknowledged the poor condition of the roads. However, he clarified that it is not his fault. He explained that since the Sub-county was carved out of Ntungamo, it has never received any road maintenance funding. He blamed the government for failing to provide the necessary support to manage Sub-county operations effectively.
