On July 19, 2024, Kanungu District leaders officially commissioned a new two-classroom block at Nyarurambi Parents Primary School in Kayonza Sub-County. The facility, which includes an office, was constructed at a cost of 114,940,260 UGX (VAT inclusive) by M/s EXTECH TECHNICAL SERVICES LTD. The project was funded through a transitional grant secured by Hon. Kinshaba Patience Nkunda.

Ambrose Mwesigye expressed gratitude to Hon. Nkunda for facilitating the construction of the new education facility. He acknowledged the positive impact of such projects on local infrastructure, including roads, and emphasized that while the funds are government-sourced, they are driven by community needs. However, Mwesigye voiced concerns about the poor sanitary and environmental conditions of the school, which he found to be unsanitary.

Madam Gertrude Mutahakana, Principal Assistant Chief Administrative Officer, apologized for the school’s poor conditions and urged both teachers and parents to maintain cleanliness. She was particularly alarmed by the presence of children’s feces on the school grounds and warned that her next inspection would be unannounced. Mutahakana compared the situation unfavorably with the well-maintained environment of Mpungu-Kashenyi.

Shaban Adam, the District Education Officer, stressed the importance of educating students to foster forward-thinking and eradicate backward practices. He encouraged parents to take responsibility for their children’s education and emphasized that a clean environment is crucial for positive development.

Kenneth Tumuhamye, Secretary of Social Services, thanked the Ugandan government and the Kanungu District Council for their collaboration with Hon. Nkunda. He noted that although Nkunda had requested funds for two schools—Nyarurambi in Kayonza and Makanga Primary School in Rugyeyo—only 100 million UGX was allocated. As a result, the funds were used for Nyarurambi, with plans to address Makanga in the future.

Tumuhamye also highlighted several issues, including teacher absenteeism, improper conduct, and the presence of children under twelve loitering instead of studying. He reminded Sub-County and Parish chiefs of their supervisory responsibilities and urged them to report any issues to the district. Additionally, he pointed out the substandard quality of the building’s paint job, which will need to be redone.
