Over the weekend, leaders of Kanungu district local government decided to halt and postpone the commissioning of infrastructure at Rushaka Primary School in Nyamirama sub-county due to substandard workmanship and poor quality standards.

The project at Rushaka Primary School comprised a 3-classroom block, an office, and a 5-stance VIP lined pit latrine for boys. It was contracted to Ndebuta Contractors Ltd for a sum exceeding sh. 185m.

The decision to postpone the commissioning was made because of several issues observed, including disparities in floor tile joints and inadequate finishing of the drainage channel edges.

Hon. James Ruugi Kaberuka, the Kinkiizi West Legislator, expressed disappointment with the contractor’s work quality, stressing the importance of using competent engineers for government contracts to ensure satisfactory outcomes.

While acknowledging the government’s efforts to enhance educational infrastructure in the county, Kaberuka urged contractors to adhere strictly to agreed-upon specifications.

Gad Ahimbisibwe Rugaju, the Kanungu Deputy Resident District Commissioner, underscored the importance of adhering to agreed procedures from groundbreaking to commissioning, cautioning against any deviations that could compromise the integrity of the handover process.

He emphasized the commitment of district leaders to maintaining high-quality standards in government project construction.

Sunday Charles, the Kanungu District Education Officer, addressed challenges faced by government-aided schools and called for parental support. He stressed the significance of active parental involvement in school activities, noting a tendency to prioritize girls’ education over boys’.

Engineer Nsamba stated that the contractor would rectify the defects within the liability period, as the government still retains a balance of 31 million shillings pending satisfactory completion of the project.
