Kanungu’s Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Gad Ahimbisibwe Rugaaju, has issued a summons for all emyooga loan defaulters to either report to his office or settle their debts within a week, warning of imminent arrest for those who fail to comply.

Ahimbisibwe conveyed this message during a press conference held at his office in Kihiihi Town Council, Kanungu District. The conference was convened to address complaints from various loans committee members of Kinkizi West Emyooga Saccos Ltd. They were submitting the names of members who had defaulted on the seed capital fund since 2022.

He emphasized that the recovery of defaulted seed capital is crucial for the success of the emyoonga program in Kanungu District, designed to alleviate poverty among its members. As it operates as a revolving fund, defaulters must be apprehended to retrieve the funds, as per the program’s implementation guidelines.

Caleb Muhanuuzi Owomuhangyi, the Kanungu District Commercial Officer, disclosed that high-performing emyooga Sacco members, based on savings, shareholding, membership, and recovery, have been granted an additional 20 million Ugandan shillings in seed capital. Furthermore, 20 Saccos in Kinkizi East and West have applied for similar funding.

Muhanuuzi highlighted the detrimental impact of defaulters, hindering other groups’ access to additional government funding. He urged all groups to prioritize timely repayment for continued support from the government.

The Deputy RDC is now planning an operation to supervise the reports of all Emyooga Saccos, emphasizing a zero-tolerance approach toward individuals attempting to undermine presidential programs aimed at poverty alleviation in Uganda.

The list submitted to the Deputy RDC’s office revealed that some members, who had received amounts ranging from 1 million to 2.5 million Ugandan shillings from various emyooga Saccos, have partially or not repaid any portion of the seed capital they received since 2022.
