Kaharo Primary School in Kaharo Sub-County, Ndorwa East, Kabale District, has launched a fundraising campaign aimed at constructing housing units for its teachers. The event, held today at Kaharo Church of Uganda in Ahamuramere Village, comes after growing concern from parents, guardians, well-wishers, and former students about the lack of on-site accommodation for the school’s teaching staff.
The school’s headteacher, Mr. Godwin Kabumburi, revealed that all 13 teachers currently live outside the school premises, causing frequent delays and missed lessons, particularly during the rainy season. Kabumburi explained that the initiative seeks to raise over 140 million shillings to build four housing units within the school compound, with fundraising efforts set to continue until the target is met.
Speaking at the launch, Mr. Twehangane Eric, chairperson of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), said that government support had been limited since the school was founded by the Church. He urged more well-wishers to join the cause, noting that the government had previously contributed only iron sheets for the construction of a classroom block.
Senior lawyer and distinguished alumnus Dr. Akampumuza James Rutanga also attended the event, emphasizing the urgent need for additional renovations at the school, including more classrooms and staff quarters to enhance the learning environment.
According to the Ministry of Education and Sports, the current government policy prioritizes donating iron sheets and completing stalled construction projects.
At the end of Saturday’s event, the school had raised a total of 20,422,000 shillings in cash and pledges.
