Seasonal heavy rains and storms destroy residents’ property and crops in Kacereere Ward, Kacereere Town Council; local leaders vow to implement guaranteed proper farming methods and house tanks to solve the seasonal challenge.

The seasonal heavy rains that included storms and floods, which deliberately occurred last Saturday, have been reported to have caused heavy destruction of property and farming fields in some parts of Kacereere T/C, leaving some residents hopeless after heavy losses and others homeless, most especially in Nyamatembe and Bugandaro cells.

Speaking with Boona Radio, one of the local leaders identified as Mbabazi Jeffrey, the Chairperson LC1 for Nyamatembe cell in Nyamatembe Ward, Kacereere T/C, with a lot of frustrations, told Boona Radio that about four homes in his cell were completely destroyed, including food crops and animal husbandry, on Saturday, 7th March 2026.

He urged that despite some people practicing proper methods of farming like terracing and afforestation, many others didn’t follow the procedure and focused on growing both crops and rearing animals, leaving the soil bare and unprotected from speeding water.

He said that they became lucky since heavy rains happened during the day, unlike during the night when residents were likely to be swept away together with their houses while sleeping.

Currently, Mr. Jeffrey said that the affected residents are now being helped by fellows to renovate their homes through Bataka Village communal works since Saturday to date.

The Kacereere Town Council Mayor, Mr. Eliab Mugambagye, also confirmed that rains which occurred last Saturday caused serious damage whereby residents’ valued properties, such as some homes, crops, and animal husbandry, were greatly affected, leaving some families homeless.

He said that cells like Nyamatembe and Bugandaro cells in Nyamatembe Ward were the ones which were badly affected with floods, soil erosion, and home flooding; however, he said that these areas are hilly and have soft soils, which are accompanied by heavy population and underground natural water streams, giving room for speeding water to take land easily and crops.

He delegated that the challenge has been addressed by terracing (digging ditches to stop speeding water) for years, but when the rainy season comes, it becomes worse and uncontrollable.

He said that some residents also use poor farming methods, such as planting Eucalyptus trees, which don’t allow bushes to grow nearby, deliberately increasing the speed of water.

He therefore announced guaranteed proper farming methods implementation for all residents, including civil education on how to control speeding water, most especially encouraging them to do afforestation using favorable tree species, terracing lands, and contour ploughing to regulate the common seasonal challenge.
