Kabale District Local Government has initiated 17 women’s groups, which have received a total of 127 million Uganda shillings from the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development through the Uganda Women Entrepreneurial Program-UWEP.

At the commissioning ceremony held at the District council hall on Friday, Ronald Bakak, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner of Kabale, cautioned the beneficiaries against misappropriating the funds for purposes other than those specified in the program’s guidelines. He stressed that the funds, despite being provided by the government, are not a gift but a grant that must be repaid within three years.

Bakak emphasized the potential legal repercussions for any misuse of funds and urged strict adherence to the project guidelines submitted to the ministry.

Christopher Namara, the Kabale District Community Development Officer, revealed that the District has been benefiting from UWEP since the 2016/2017 Financial Year, having disbursed a total of 919 million shillings. Namara expressed concern about beneficiaries who frequently default on repayment, alleging collusion with district technical staff.
