A historic step toward decentralizing higher education and unlocking local development potential is underway in Rukungiri District, as Kabale University prepares to officially launch its Rukungiri Branch tomorrow, 23rd May 2025. The new campus, located at the former Rukungiri PTC College in Nyakiina, Buyanja sub-county, promises to bring university education closer to the people of Rukungiri and surrounding districts.
On Thursday, final preparations—including a press conference and an inspection tour—were carried out by a high-powered delegation from Kabale University. The team was led by Mr. Naris Tibenderana, the Academic Registrar, Prof. John Mugisha, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, and Canon Benon Kwikiriza, the Deputy Academic Registrar for the Rukungiri campus.
Speaking to the media, Prof. John Mugisha emphasized that the initiative marks a major milestone not just for the university, but also for the wider Kigezi region. “This is not just a campus—it is a foundation for community transformation,” he said. “We believe this branch will play a vital role in regional development by providing accessible, quality education and spurring economic activity.”
Although academic programs will not begin immediately, Prof. Mugisha assured the public that preparations are advanced and student admissions will commence soon. He highlighted that Kabale University, as a public institution, is committed to providing affordable and relevant education that meets the needs of the people.
Mr. Tibenderana, the Academic Registrar, revealed that the Rukungiri branch will roll out gradually, starting with flagship courses such as Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Agriculture. “These programs were carefully selected to align with local community needs, and more courses—such as ICT and Public Administration—will be introduced progressively,” he noted.
Canon Benon Kwikiriza, who has played a key role in community engagement, said thorough consultations were conducted to ensure the campus serves the people effectively. “We listened to the voices of Rukungiri residents. This campus reflects their hopes. The presence of a university here will not only create academic opportunities but also stimulate local businesses, job creation, and urban growth,” he added.
The launch ceremony will be presided over by Kabale University Chancellor, Prof. Mondo Kagonyera, alongside officials from the Ministry of Education and Sports and other key stakeholders who support the vision of equitable access to education.
Residents are urged to attend the grand opening, which represents not only the arrival of a university but a new chapter of empowerment and prosperity for the entire district.
