Preparations are in full swing for the centenary celebrations of Rushoroza Cathedral Parish, the current seat of Kabale Catholic Diocese in Kabale District, covering the entire Kigezi region.
President Yoweri Museveni has confirmed his attendance as the Guest of Honor to the bishop of the diocese, Rt Rev Callist Rubaramira, according to Rev Fr. Austin Christmas, the parish priest.
Established on November 1, 1923, Rushoroza Cathedral Parish is the first Catholic parish in Kigezi, originating from Kitabi Parish in Bushenyi District, now part of the Mbarara Archdiocese.
The parish’s foundation dates back to 1912 when Yowana Kitegana arrived, establishing the first church where priests from Kitabi seminary would administer sacraments.
Tomorrow’s Mass at Our Lady of Good Shepherd, Rushoroza Cathedral Parish, Kabale Municipality, will be presided over by H.E. Luigi Bianco, Papal Nuncio to Uganda.
Fr. Christmas emphasized that the celebrations mark the parish’s establishment, bringing people closer to the minister, and celebrating the gift of faith.
Engineer Januarius Turinawe Bagamuhunda, Chairman of the Organizing Committee, anticipates over 7000 believers, including those from outside Uganda, reflecting on Christianity’s growth over the past century.
He further noted that over that period, Kabale diocese has witnessed remarkable spiritual work from 1923 to 2023, where more and more churches have been planted.
Engineer Denis Twesigomwe, on the steering committee, highlighted Kabale diocese’s contributions to spiritual growth, mentioning Catholic Charismatic renewal centers and outstanding educational institutions.
Twesigomwe emphasized that Kabale diocese has, for years, enhanced spiritual growth by establishing two Catholic Charismatic renewal centers; namely, Jesus the Good Shepherd Kiniogo Kabale and Word of God Retreat Center Nyakibale in Rukungiri district.
Wilfred Niwagaba, Ndorwa East Member of Parliament and alumnus of St. Paul’s Seminary Rushoroza, congratulated Kabale diocese for 100 years of faith, acknowledging their impact on both gospel preaching and running health and educational facilities, improving people’s lives.
