Kyatoko Primary School in Eastern Division, Rukungiri Municipality, was filled with joy and excitement on Saturday, March 29, 2025, as parents, well-wishers, and alumni gathered for a fundraising event aimed at constructing a three-classroom block for the nursery section and acquiring computers for the school.
The event was graced by Counsel Isaac Atukunda, an old student of the school and a candidate for the Rukungiri Municipality parliamentary seat, who served as the guest of honor. In his speech, Counsel Isaac emphasized the importance of alumni support for their former schools, particularly in fundraising and development projects.
“Government support for government-aided schools is often insufficient, necessitating additional contributions from parents, well-wishers, and alumni who are products of these institutions,” he stated.
As part of his contribution, Counsel Isaac donated 100 bags of cement and presented a cheque worth 12 million shillings from Kyatoko Investment Club, an organization he chairs, comprising members from Kyatoko, Eastern Division, Rukungiri Municipality. He also highlighted his commitment to education through the Atukunda Education Trust, a charity organization supporting over 25 students from vulnerable families across Rukungiri Municipality.
Gashom Twesigye, the chairperson of the organizing committee, noted that the fundraiser coincided with the school’s centennial celebrations, as Kyatoko Primary School was established in 1925 as a church school before becoming a primary school in 1967. He acknowledged the school’s persistent challenges, including a shortage of classrooms and furniture, and expressed gratitude to all attendees for their generous support.
Headteacher Samuel Ahumuza Besimbiire expressed appreciation to all contributors, particularly Counsel Isaac, for mobilizing support. He emphasized that the fundraiser aimed to improve the learning environment by addressing the shortage of classrooms, inadequate sanitation facilities, and the need for a functional computer system, including a photocopier and printer to aid in test preparation.
Aspiring Rukungiri District Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Mary Paula Turyahikayo, also supported the fundraiser and commended the alumni of Kyatoko Primary School for setting a positive example by giving back. She encouraged former students to remain involved in their alma maters, citing her own contributions to her former school, Immaculate Heart, as an example.
By the end of the event, a total of 27 million shillings and 107 bags of cement were collected in cash, with an additional 3 million shillings pledged. The contributions are expected to significantly enhance learning conditions at Kyatoko Primary School.
