Jacqueline Mbabazi has been declared the winner of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) primary election for the Western Uganda Older Persons Parliamentary seat, after defeating her closest rival Patrick Kyamukwata Mutabwire in a peaceful and transparent poll.

According to the final tally released by the NRM Electoral Commission, Mbabazi garnered 189 votes, while Kyamukwata polled 137 votes. The election, which took place on Tuesday, followed a directive from the NRM Election Disputes Tribunal that ordered a fresh poll after nullifying an earlier decision made on September 5, 2025.

The Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Kabale, Michael Muramira Kyakashari, commended the NRM for organizing a credible and peaceful election. He said the delegates freely exercised their right to choose their preferred candidates without intimidation or interference, adding that the exercise reflected growing political maturity within the ruling party.

Kyakashari also noted that the election was much better organized compared to previous ones that were often characterized by tension and irregularities.

Agents of Jacqueline Mbabazi Jenina Kabakyiraho and Richard Mporera lauded the smooth conduct of the polls, saying the process was peaceful and well-secured, with no incidents of malpractice reported. They expressed confidence that the outcome was a true reflection of the delegates’ will.

In Kabale District, 13 delegates participated in the election, with nine voting for Mbabazi and four for Mutabwire.

Kyakashari concluded by applauding the NRM Electoral Commission for ensuring fairness and transparency, saying the peaceful conduct of the polls demonstrated the party’s commitment to democratic principles and unity ahead of the 2026 general elections.
