Mrs. Aidah Gumisiriza, the Inspector of Schools overseeing Nyarushanje Sub County in Rukungiri district, has attributed the ongoing academic challenges in local schools to the failure of head teachers to effectively fulfill their supervisory duties towards teachers and students.
Addressing primary school head teachers at a general meeting held at Makobore High School, Mrs. Aidah commended them for successfully navigating through the challenges of the first term of 2024. However, she voiced her disappointment regarding the inadequate supervision of teachers and students by some head teachers. She noted that during inspections, it was observed that many schools lacked proper schemes, including lesson planning, which directly impacts academic performance.
Mrs. Aidah urged head teachers to prioritize their supervisory responsibilities in the upcoming term if they aim to enhance academic standards in their schools.
Turyahumura Jackson, the Rukungiri District Education Officer, echoed Mrs. Aidah’s concerns and cautioned head teachers against engaging in unethical practices such as exam cheating and bribery. He emphasized that such actions jeopardize the future of the students.
Additionally, Jackson highlighted the issue of unauthorized boarding facilities in certain schools, labeling them as illegal. He called upon the head teachers of such institutions to rectify the situation by registering these facilities, emphasizing their accountability for any consequences affecting the students.
