Madam Namara Annet Kadoth of Kadoth Clinics Rukungiri has raised an alarm over the rising cases of ulcer disease in the district, which has left many residents in panic. Speaking in an interview with our reporter today, Madam Kadoth explained that the public needs to be vigilant about this growing health issue.
According to her, ulcers are open sores that form on the inner lining of the stomach and the upper part of the small intestine, called the duodenum. These sores develop when stomach acid eats away at the inner surface of the digestive tract, leading to painful, open sores that can bleed.
She highlighted that dull or burning stomach pain, especially between meals or at night, is a common symptom. Other signs include a feeling of fullness, bloating, belching, heartburn, nausea, and vomiting. More severe symptoms such as vomiting blood, dark blood in stools, or black, tarry stools should prompt immediate medical attention. Fainting or dizziness are also potential warning signs.
Kadoth emphasized that certain factors such as old age (particularly those over 60), smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, stress, and spicy foods are known to increase the risk of developing ulcers.
In a message to the public, Madam Kadoth advised residents to seek medical attention if they experience any of the severe symptoms. She also urged people to work with healthcare professionals to manage pain relief carefully, avoiding alcohol when using pain relievers, as this can increase the risk of stomach issues.
“Let’s be mindful of our health and make sure to visit a healthcare provider if we notice any alarming symptoms,” Kadoth stated.
