Students of Immaculate Heart Girls Secondary School Nyakibale have voiced concerns over what they describe as a lack of parental support for their involvement in games and sports. The girls raised the issue on Monday, July 7, 2025, during the school’s annual Sports Day held at the school premises in Eastern Division, Rukungiri Municipality.

The event saw intense competitions between students grouped in different houses, with games such as football, volleyball, netball, javelin, and athletics taking center stage. The Green House dominated most activities, but it was the Red House that emerged as the overall winner.

While showcasing their talent and enthusiasm, several students expressed disappointment over the negative attitude of some parents who discourage their daughters from participating in sports. They emphasized the benefits of sports, including access to bursaries, improved health, friendship networks, and supplementary points in national exams.

The school’s Games and Sports teacher, Atamba Gerevius, praised the students’ commitment and vibrant spirit for sports but noted challenges, including a lack of proper training facilities like a gym.

The headmistress, Sister Tumusime Sabiina, commended the learners for embracing sports, underlining that active participation can earn them up to four supplementary points in national examinations. She encouraged students to remain focused and determined both in academics and co-curricular activities.

The Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner, Steven Nsubuga Bewayo, who officiated at the event and presided over the inauguration of 1,118 new patriots, urged the students to stay committed to their dream careers. He also called on them to remain patriotic and resilient in the face of life’s challenges.
