The Member of Parliament for Rukungiri Municipality, Hon. Dr. Elisa Rutahirwa, has called on the people of Rukungiri to exercise vigilance when selecting leaders by thoroughly assessing their leadership track records.

Hon. Rutahirwa made these remarks on Monday, 27th January 2025, during a one-day meeting held at Geso Inn. The meeting brought together over 60 incumbent and aspiring councilors under the National Resistance Movement (NRM) from Rukungiri Municipality and Rukungiri District.

He emphasized that election seasons often attract a variety of candidates—some genuine and others questionable—making it imperative for voters to scrutinize the candidates carefully to ensure they choose capable leaders.

“The purpose of this meeting is to equip councilors with knowledge about the developments in the municipality so they can relay accurate information to their constituents,” Hon. Rutahirwa explained. He noted that some councilors have been misled by individuals, especially those competing for the same positions, who seek to tarnish their names.

He also cautioned residents to avoid being swayed by monetary inducements during elections, as such decisions often lead to electing incompetent leaders, thereby affecting service delivery. Hon. Rutahirwa urged voters to prioritize integrity, citing his own track record and the development projects he has implemented in Rukungiri Municipality, with plans to accomplish even more.

Geoffrey Kyomukama, the LC5 Chairperson for Rukungiri District, who also attended the meeting, highlighted the need for peaceful elections. He urged candidates to refrain from violence and defamatory rhetoric against their opponents, instead encouraging them to focus on earning votes through their policies and actions.

Kyomukama further warned against double-dealing—supporting multiple candidates vying for the same position—as it creates confusion and fosters violence.

Silvia Katimbura, the Chairperson of the Western Division, urged NRM supporters to remain peaceful, united, and committed to electing leaders from their political party. She emphasized that internal divisions within the NRM risk enabling the election of unqualified leaders, ultimately leading to poor service delivery.

Several councilors who attended the meeting, including Emily Tusasirye (Women’s Councilor for Kigaaga Ward), John Mukula (Councilor for People with Disabilities in Southern Division), and Judith Kiconco Musimenta, commended Hon. Dr. Rutahirwa for organizing the event. They noted that the meeting provided valuable insights that would guide them in the upcoming elections.

The councilors acknowledged that the discussions helped distinguish genuine NRM supporters from those lacking competence, enabling them to make informed decisions about leadership at all levels. They pledged their support for Hon. Dr. Rutahirwa to continue as the NRM flag bearer for Rukungiri Municipality.
