Residents of Kishanda 2 Cell and Kahihi Cell, both part of Nyakineengo Parish in Nyakagyeme Sub County, Rukungiri District, are urgently seeking assistance following recent heavy rains that have caused significant damage to their food crops and properties.
Allen Kamusiime, a resident of Kishanda 2 Cell, reported that the heavy rains began on Friday night and continued into Saturday evening, resulting in severe damage to newly planted crops including beans, bananas, and cassava. The destruction has particularly impacted early-season farmers, who planted their crops earlier than usual.
Allen Kamusiime calls upon the government and the wider community to offer support during this difficult time, emphasizing that without aid, the residents face significant challenges in the coming months.
Nanono Reacheal, another resident of Kishanda 2 Cell, expressed frustration and concern over the current situation, highlighting the severe impact of the rains on their crops.
Eric Atuhurira, a resident of Kahihi Cell, shared that the heavy rains not only destroyed crops like cassava and bananas but also damaged water sources, including water pipes on rooftops that collect rainwater.
Silver Bongyeire, the LC1 Chairperson of Kahihi Cell, noted that while infrastructure such as roads and settlement areas were less affected, the destruction of food crops has raised serious concerns about future food security. He confirmed that crops like young beans, cassava, and banana leaves have been severely damaged.
Silver Bongyeire is currently compiling a list of affected residents to present to local leaders in hopes of securing assistance and support for those in need.
