The territorial police in Kabale District have arrested five suspects, including three NIRA assistant registrars and their two brokers, for allegedly soliciting bribes during the ongoing registration exercise.
The suspects were apprehended on 16th October 2025 from Butanda and Kahungye Sub-counties following multiple complaints from residents about being charged between 10,000 and 12,000 shillings for registration services that are meant to be free.
Those arrested include NIRA assistant registrar Kwesiga Erias, and brokers Joseph Saali and Simpson Mugisha, who were arrested at Kinyamali COU Compassion Centre with UGX 485,000. At Rubaya COU Compassion Centre in Kahungye Sub-county, Kukundakwe Halima and Kwesiga Ronald, both assistant registrars, were found with UGX 86,000. Their alleged broker, a cook identified as Milda, reportedly fled with additional money.
According to the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, the arrests followed several public complaints and serve as a stern warning to others engaging in similar acts of corruption. He added that investigations are ongoing, and the suspects will be produced before court upon completion of inquiries.
