The public has been urged to help identify individuals involved in money laundering.

This appeal was made by the Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA) team during a press conference held on Thursday at Kihihi Meeting Point in Kihihi Town Council, Kanungu District.

Jossy Muhangyi from the FIA explained that money laundering involves processes of converting or transferring funds or financial assets, knowing they are derived from criminal activities, or assisting individuals involved in such offenses. He noted that launderers attempt to “clean” the money to use it without detection of its illegal origins. “Through money laundering, the criminal transforms the monetary proceeds derived from crime,” Muhangyi elaborated.

Allan Kaganzi, another officer from the FIA, warned the public against assisting criminals involved in money laundering-related offenses. These offenses include corruption, embezzlement, drug trafficking, human trafficking (including organ trade and harvesting), arms and gold smuggling, financial fraud, robbery, kidnapping for ransom, illegal wildlife trade, cybercrime, and murder.

Journalists at the conference questioned the integrity of high-ranking government officials responsible for protecting Ugandan funds from misuse, suggesting that some may be involved in money laundering themselves. Chris Kaleju, one of the journalists, asked the FIA team about the allegations against the current Speaker of Parliament, accused of misusing government funds, and whether this constituted money laundering. The FIA team declined to comment, stating that the matter is under investigation, and the Speaker’s fate will be determined upon the conclusion of these investigations.
