Rukungiri police have reported a tragic road accident that occurred on the 22nd of October, 2024, at approximately 11:30 a.m. at Kyomera Trading Center in Bugangari Sub-county, Rukungiri District.
The accident involved a white Isuzu Elf truck, registration number UAZ 355L, which fatally injured 19-year-old Edwin Akoragye, a casual laborer from Nyakinengo Cell, Nyabiteete Parish in Bugangari Sub-county.
Eyewitnesses allege that Akoragye attempted to board the moving truck, but in the process, he stepped on a rolling tire and was tragically run over after losing his balance. He was rushed to Bugangari Health Centre, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Following the accident, the driver of the truck drove to Bikurungu Town and handed the vehicle over to another individual, who delivered it to Bikurungu Police Station.
Police traffic officers have examined and documented the scene, and the vehicle is currently impounded at Bikurungu Police Station pending further inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV). A post-mortem has been conducted, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed the incident and stated that inquiries are underway.
