Despite the implementation of a gravity water scheme initiated by the government in Mafuuga, Rutenga sub-county, Kanungu district five years ago, residents in the area continue to grapple with water scarcity.
The intended purpose of the water project was to alleviate the water crisis in Mafuuga; however, it failed to reach the targeted areas. According to Banard Bakesigaki, the councilor for Mafuuga parish in Rutenga sub-county, the project’s execution was substandard, and the infrastructure did not last for even a year.
The project was meant to cover hilly areas, including Mafuuga forest reserve, Nyakarambi, and Nyamugaari, but unfortunately, these locations were not reached. Banard disclosed that numerous residents still struggle to access water for their daily needs.
Libin Niwagaaba, one of the residents, highlighted the dire situation, stating that the lack of proper water supply exposes them to waterborne diseases like cholera and dysentery, as they are compelled to rely on untreated water from ponds. He emphasized that it has been over five years since they last received tap water, and the scarcity of water is an ongoing issue in Mafuuga.
Libin described the challenges faced by many women who fetch water directly from ponds, often contaminated with waste washed downstream during rains. Despite raising the water shortage concerns with local leaders, residents feel unheard and compelled to use unsafe water due to the absence of alternatives.GI
