Authorities in Kebisoni Sub County, Rukungiri District, have commenced the enforcement of an Anti-Pre-mature Coffee Harvesting bylaw passed by their Council. Under this bylaw, both farmers and dealers caught with raw coffee beans in the market will face a penalty of 500,000/=.
Mzee Charles Kahanyi, the Chairperson of LC3 Kebisoni Sub County, has directed security agencies to work alongside Councilors to combat the premature harvesting of coffee beans, which he believes is detrimental to the market.
Nahwera Benson, the Sub County Councilor representing Garubunda Parish, is hopeful that this campaign will effectively tackle coffee theft, as raw coffee beans are often associated with theft.
Tindimwebwa Iscah Nahumuza, the Female Councilor representing Karuhembe Parish, attributes the practice of premature coffee harvesting to coffee garden lenders who harvest early to avoid theft and exploit coffee owners.
Bob Alex Rugonde, a Former Employee of the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) and resident of Buyanja Sub County, is dedicated to promoting coffee farming due to the current favorable income prospects.
