A tragic road accident has claimed the lives of eight people and left one injured along the Mbarara-Lyantonde highway.
The accident occurred at around 6:30 PM today in Kibega 1 Village, involving a white Toyota Hiace (registration UBQ 016U) and a Mercedes-Benz Actros trailer (registration KDQ 668L/ZH 5133).
According to the Kiruhura District Police, the Toyota Hiace, traveling from Mbarara to Lyantonde, attempted to overtake another vehicle on a corner and collided head-on with the trailer coming from Lyantonde. All occupants of the Hiace were affected, with eight confirmed dead and one seriously injured. The injured victim was rushed to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.
Police say four bodies remain trapped inside the Hiace, and rescue efforts are ongoing. Identification of the deceased is also in progress.
The police have attributed the cause of the accident to reckless driving.
