In a move aimed at enhancing security and improving livelihoods, Dr. Sylvia Alinaitwe, a hopeful Woman MP for Rukiga District, has donated more than 300 solar-powered streetlights to villages across the district.
The initiative is expected to have a significant impact, providing a safer and more secure environment for residents. While handing over the streetlights to local leaders, Dr. Alinaitwe stated that her donation was meant to combat the rising crime rates and boost nighttime economic activities. She emphasized the importance of proper lighting in ensuring security, particularly for women and traders who operate at night.
“The installation of these streetlights will help reduce crime, support businesses, and ensure that traders can work safely in the evenings. Access to lighting is a key factor in community development, and this initiative is part of my broader vision for a better and more secure Rukiga,” she stated.
The lights were distributed across all villages in Rukiga District, with local leaders tasked with identifying insecure areas for installation. Rukiga District consists of four sub-counties and two town councils, comprising a total of 293 villages.
Local leaders and residents welcomed the donation, noting that many areas had long struggled with poor lighting, leading to insecurity and limited productivity after dark. Bukinda LC3 Chairperson Geoffrey Byamugisha commended Dr. Alinaitwe for her generosity, stating that the security lights would help curb theft, which has hindered development in the district.
“These streetlights will significantly reduce crime and provide a better environment for businesses to thrive. We are grateful to Dr. Alinaitwe for this impactful initiative,” he said.
Erineho Bandaganire, the LC3 Chairperson of Kashambya Sub County, also praised the initiative, saying it would improve security and economic activities in the area.
“Many of our villages have been struggling with darkness, making it easy for criminals to operate. These lights will not only help us fight crime but also enable people to work longer hours, boosting their income. This is a commendable effort by Dr. Alinaitwe,” Bandaganire remarked.
Community members expressed their gratitude, with some noting that this was the first time their villages had received such an initiative. As the 2026 general elections approach, Dr. Alinaitwe’s gesture is seen as a strong demonstration of her commitment to improving the welfare of Rukiga residents.
