In Katuna Town Council of Kabale District, the local police are observing a decrease in criminal incidents, more than a year after the reopening of the Uganda-Rwanda border that had been closed by the Rwandan Government on February 17, 2019.

President Paul Kagame had shut the border, citing accusations against Uganda for harboring Rwandan dissidents, allegedly abducting Rwandan nationals, and confining them in unauthorized locations. However, the border was officially reopened on January 31, 2022, after three years of closure.

Moses Enyemu, the Officer In-Charge of Katuna Border Police Post, informed our correspondent today that last month they recorded only five criminal cases, primarily related to assault. This is a notable decrease compared to previous months when the number of cases exceeded ten. Enyemu attributed this decline to the implementation of community policing meetings and intensified security patrols in both the town council and along the Uganda-Rwanda border.

Despite these positive developments, Enyemu expressed concern about Ugandans crossing into Rwanda through unsecured borders to smuggle alcoholic beverages, including beers, and animals. This poses a risk to the lives of Ugandans as these drinks are not approved by the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS).
