On Friday, January 12, 2024, residents from the Cells of Katungu and Kakinga in Rwakirungura Parish, Buyanja Sub County, Rukungiri District took the initiative to renovate a vital road connecting Rwakirungura Parish to Rubanga Parish. The road, stretching from Omukiragiro trading center to Omukagaana trading center, is crucial for transportation and has been in a deteriorating condition, especially after rainfall.
Turyatemba Peace, a resident of Katungu Cell, explained that the community decided to engage in communal work to address the road’s deteriorating condition, which becomes impassable due to slippery conditions after rain.
Gad Buhe, a Boda Boda rider in the area, expressed that the decision to renovate the road stemmed from government neglect. The road plays a significant role in supporting transportation from Rubanga Parish, facilitating the supply of goods and services, including food items.
Rev Muhwezi Milton Buhe, the Chairperson LC1 Katungu Cell, Rwakingura Parish, stated that the community took on the road renovation project due to the government’s lack of attention. He emphasized the worsening situation and called on the government to install culverts and drainage systems to prevent further damage.
Agaba Emmy Rubondo, the Chairperson LC3 Buyanja Sub County, commended the residents for their significant turnout and urged everyone to embrace communal work. He highlighted the insufficiency of government-funded roads and noted that the current road, covering four parishes, had been neglected. Rubondo revealed that the last Council sitting had resolved to petition the District to take responsibility for the road.
Rubondo assured the community that this year’s Sub County financial budget includes plans for other roads, such as Karanoryaho – Nyabicence – Matebe – Kanywa to Kyamakanda, acknowledging the pressing needs for road improvement in the area.
