Coffee farmers in Kanungu have been urged to adopt the use of organic manure alongside inorganic fertilizers to improve soil fertility and boost coffee production.

This call was made by Akanyijuka Memory, an agriculturalist from the Ministry of Agriculture, speaking to the media at the district Agriculture offices in Kanungu Town Council.

Akanyijuka stressed that combining organic manure with inorganic fertilizers ensures balanced soil nutrition, improves moisture retention, and promotes sustainable coffee production. He noted that while organic manure strengthens the soil naturally, inorganic fertilizers provide specific nutrients that boost plant growth and increase yields when properly used.

Additionally, Memory emphasized the importance of pruning coffee trees, explaining that it helps remove unproductive branches, allowing the plant to channel energy into healthy growth, improving air circulation, and encouraging uniform ripening of coffee cherries.

Meanwhile, Mubangyizi Amos, a renowned coffee farmer from Nyakagyezi Village, Kambuga Sub County, commended the use of organic manure, confessing that it has improved soil fertility and increased production in his gardens. He further advised fellow farmers to conduct research and follow guidance from the ministry to boost their coffee production.

The District Agriculture office reaffirmed its commitment to continue providing technical guidance and support to farmers in order to boost coffee production and improve household incomes across Kanungu District.
