Christians have been urged to stop pretending and hiding behind Christianity, and instead fully embrace Christ, serve Him faithfully, and remain obedient to His teachings.
This call was made by the Bishop of Kinkiizi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Dan Zoreka, while presiding over the memorial thanksgiving service of the Late Rev. Canon Eric John Baabo in Kyamakanda, Buyanja Sub-county, Kanungu District. The late Canon Baabo, who passed away in 2000, was remembered for his dedication to church service and family. He and his wife, Canon Grace Baabo, had eight children—four boys and four girls.
Bishop Zoreka described Canon Baabo as a disciplined man who valued time management and was passionate about teaching people how to overcome poverty and live purpose-driven lives. He encouraged Christians to use their time wisely, reminding them that each day is a gift from God and should be used to serve Him genuinely.
He also emphasized the importance of parental responsibility, saying God will hold parents accountable in the afterlife for how they raised their children. He praised Canon Baabo for leaving behind a strong legacy by educating and preparing his children for life’s challenges.
Emeritus Bishop Patrick Tugume Tusingwire also paid tribute to the late Canon Baabo, describing him as a genuine, Christ-centered servant of God who hated sin and lived a life of integrity. He encouraged Christians to be faithful stewards of the responsibilities God has given them.
Canon Benon Kwikyiriza, one of the sons of the late Canon Baabo, thanked God for the life and ministry of their father, whom he said prepared them well for life and encouraged them to value relationships. He also appreciated their mother, Grace Baabo, for keeping the family united over the last 25 years since Canon Baabo’s passing.
Irene Baabo Kyinayenzire, a daughter of the late Canon, praised her father for guiding them in the Christian path and called on parents to raise their children with strong values. She urged families to embrace unity, love, and avoid unnecessary conflicts.
Hon. Prof. Mondo Kagonyera, Chancellor of Kabale University, commended the family for preserving Canon Baabo’s legacy. He noted the contribution of Canon Benon Kwikyiriza in bringing Kabale University closer to the people through the Buyanja branch. Prof. Mondo also urged the community to vote wisely in the coming political season, focusing on competent and service-driven leaders rather than religious or clan affiliations.
He further called on church leaders to prioritize education and support schools under their stewardship, noting a decline in performance in church-based schools. He also advised parents to embrace family planning to ensure better care and planning for their children.
