Vendors at Mbarara Central Market express concerns about the increasing prevalence of street vending in the city, noting a consistent decline in customer numbers at the market. According to the vendors, the City Council appears focused on tax collection rather than addressing the challenges they face.
In discussions with our reporter, Central Market vendors highlight the need for the City Council to take action to curb street vending, which they believe is impacting their customer base negatively.
The vendors assert that the lack of customers is also linked to suppliers who not only provide goods to the market but also engage in direct retail supply to end consumers. This dual approach by suppliers is perceived as a hindrance to the vendors’ businesses.
In addition to their appeal to the City Council, market vendors are calling on the Government to involve them in business programs aimed at upgrading their enterprises.
Efforts to seek clarification from the Mbarara City Clerk, Assy Abirebe, regarding the issue of street vending have been unsuccessful thus far.
