Businesses along Kinyasano Road in the western division of Rukungiri Municipality are facing a dire situation due to the ongoing road renovation work. 2
The renovation, which began last week during the rainy season, was expected to be a short-term project as indicated by technocrats, but it has exceeded the anticipated timeframe.
Our reporter visited business owners along this road, who expressed dismay over the current state of affairs.
Kyomugabe Milia, the Manager at Chello Petrol Station along the affected road, disclosed that the incomplete road has severely impacted their business, with customers finding it difficult to reach their premises. She mentioned that despite reaching out to the area MP, Hon. Elisa Rutahigwa, who visited the road recently, no significant action has been taken to address the situation.
Mweisgwa Hilary, who runs a pork business along the same road, shared a similar somber tale, highlighting the negative effects on revenue generation. He expressed concerns about paying workers due to the financial downturn caused by the inaccessible road.2
Mujuni Patrick, the director of Unique Engineers, lamented the apparent lack of urgency from municipal authorities in addressing the road issue. He criticized the authorities for expecting taxes from affected businesses while neglecting their responsibility to resolve the problem promptly.
However, Innocent Rubarondesa, the municipal councilor representing Kinyasano, empathized with the distressed businessmen. He assured them that the rehabilitation work would resume once the weather conditions improve, emphasizing that the initial goal was to address urgent pothole issues on the road.
Efforts to obtain a comment from the municipal engineer proved futile, as repeated calls went unanswered.
