Gilbert Boona, the deputy town clerk of Bushenyi Ishaka municipality, acknowledged awareness of the executive order regarding garbage collection, emphasizing their efforts to ensure that garbage is managed at its source.
He noted that garbage is now collected for a nominal fee approved by the council, alleviating financial strain and redirecting funds to other beneficial purposes. Boona expressed reluctance to reintroduce garbage skips in the municipality, deeming it an outdated method of waste management. He highlighted the effectiveness of modern garbage collection methods in reducing flies, odors, and enhancing town hygiene.
Evaristo Mucunguzi, the municipality speaker, commented that the current system appears functional as waste generators are responsible for their garbage disposal. Despite encountering minor challenges, Mucunguzi stated that they are making progress, with approximately 70% compliance among residents.
It’s important to note that on April 9, 2023, President Museveni issued an executive order mandating urban authorities to ensure a garbage skip is available every 200 meters. This directive was to be implemented within six months, with skips emptied at least every three days, or more frequently if necessary due to large volumes of waste.
