The Bushenyi Deputy Resident District Commissioner (DRDC), Williams Donanto Kasigazi, has urged the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) to defend the rights of journalists and telecommunication clients to ensure fairness.

This was part of his remarks on Thursday, 27th March 2025, while closing a one-day sensitization meeting on media regulations adherence. The meeting, attended by journalists from Western Uganda, was held at Premier Motel in Bushenyi District and organized by UCC.

Donanto emphasized the need for UCC to stand with journalists, stressing that some receive little or no pay despite performing noble work. He also highlighted irregularities affecting telecommunication clients, calling for UCC’s advocacy.

Ms. Victoria Sekandi, the Head of Licensing at UCC, expressed regret over the harsh working conditions faced by journalists. She urged them to invest in innovation and adapt to the evolving media landscape to enhance their career competencies.

Daniel Bitwababo, the regulations overseer, revealed plans to investigate unregistered media platforms, such as websites and YouTube channels with at least 500 viewers, with the aim of enrolling them for revenue regulation.

Journalists, including Geoffrey Rurekyera and Zephrino Turyomurutaro, called on UCC to advocate for fair treatment by politicians and employers, improved salaries, and proper management of mushrooming media platforms that undermine industry standards.
